Travel Writing Workshop
This February, I’m teaching a travel writing workshop through Centralia College East. The class is part of the college’s winter quarter community education program, and we’ll meet 5:30-8:30pm on 2/2, 2/9, and 2/16 at the Bean Tree Coffee House in Morton, Washington.
Here’s the course description:
Travel writing requires a sense of adventure, a keen eye for detail, and a storyteller’s flair. In this three-week workshop students will work on practical skills for writing nonfiction travelogues including character sketches, point-of-view, and scene construction, as well as options for publishing including essays, blogs, guidebooks, memoirs and articles. Bring your ideas, questions, favorite travel stories, and your notebook. Class fee: $25.
Join us! I’d love to see new or familiar faces, and Morton is a gorgeous and quirky little town that’s nestled in the foothills of Mount Rainier — perfect for drinking coffee, making new friends, and talking about writing. The official course flier is here; feel free to email me with questions or call (360) 496-5022 to register.
Also, if you join the class on February 9th, you’re in for a special treat. Adam Angel, my friend and fellow mountain guide, is an incredible photographer. As luck would have it, he lives in Morton, where he runs the Kalakora Gallery — and he’s invited us for a private showing! In addition to the evening’s writing instruction, we’ll see prints from Adam and Mike Hamill, explore the gallery’s historic building, and hear stories from around the world. I’m so excited that he’s agreed to give us a behind-the-scenes tour.
